Edo-Tokyo Museum

Edo-Tokyo Museum is a massive museum about the history of Tokyo.  Features replicas and originals from the Edo era (between 1603 and 1868) up to now, a detailed timeline of the city and art from different periods.  Excellent English descriptions available.

Budget travel tips

  • Sumo Arena is right next to Edo-Tokyo Museum, so it’s worth having a little look.  Location shown on map below.
  • Allow for a few hours in this museum, it really is huge.
  • There is a free Japanese garden behind the museum, the Former Yasuda Garden.
  • Check out the Grutto Pass for discounts to this and other museums.

How to get there

The museum is next to Ryogoku station.

From Shinjuku station, take the Sobu Line (yellow JR line) to Ryogoku station (16 mins, 210 yen).

From Tokyo station, take the Yamanote line (green JR line) to Akihabara station, then the Sobu Line line (yellow JR line) to Ryogoku station (9 mins, 150 yen).

Opening times: 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. (Saturday until 7:30 p.m.)

Closed: Mondays

Cost: Adults 600 yen, Children and Seniors 300 yen
