Imperial Palace East Garden

The East Garden, right in the center of Tokyo, is a free park within the Imperial Palace complex.  Highlights include Ninomaru Garden, a traditional Japanese garden, and the remains of the former castle tower.

Budget travel tips

  • A walk around the whole Imperial Palace is highly recommended, allowing you to see the different buildings, defensive walls, bridges and other so on.

  • The free The Museum of the Imperial Collections (Sannomaru-Shōzōkan) contains 9,500 items of Imperial art, such as paintings and calligraphy artifacts.

How to get there

The East Garden is near Otemachi station exit C10.  Walk straight ahead from here.

From Shinjuku station, take the Marunouchi Line (red Metro line) to Tokyo station (20 mins, 190 yen).

From Tokyo station, take the Marunouchi Line (red Metro line) to Otemachi station (1 min, 160 yen).  You can also walk underground from Tokyo station to Otemachi station in about 10-15 minutes.
