Mount Takao

The cheapest and easiest to access mountain in Tokyo.  It really is a  great deal, as the 1 hour train ride only costs 380 yen.  Mount Takao is a truly beautiful mountain to visit anytime of the year.

There are various trails to take, depending on how much time you want to spend and how much you like to hike.  There is also a cable car if you want to cut the journey time to the top in half.  Along the way there are plenty of wonderful shrines, parks and nature to keep anyone interested.

Budget travel tips

  • Pick up a free hiking map from Shinjuku station (Keio line) or the Tourist Information Centre in Shinjuku (see ‘i’ icon on map).

  • It’s a very easy walk up, so don’t bother with the cable car if you like a nice hike.

How to get there

From Shinjuku station, take the Keio line (private line) to Takaosanguchi station (370 yen, 1 hour). You may need to change at Kitano station. The way from Takaosanguchi station is well signposted.

Hostels and Cheap Hotels

Most people do a one day trip to Mount Takao, so we recommend staying in Tokyo.
