Obuse is a lovely little town near Nagano.  The old-fashioned streets and countless interesting temples provide a great one day trip.  Obuse is a good place to visit on the way to Yudanaka  and the Monkey Park.

Budget travel tips

  • See our map below for a recommended walking route (red line).  This is the best way to see Obuse.
  • Pick up a free map of the area at the Tourist Information Office at Nagano station.  The tourist office in Obuse is often closed.

Things to do

Gansho-in Temple (FREE)

A beautiful temple, accessed up a stone path through the forest.  Go here if you want to visit a temple that is a little different from the rest.

Hokusai-Kan Museum

Hokusai-san was one of the most famous painters during the Edo period in Japan.  This museum has a good selection of his work.

Open: 9:00-17:00

Price: Adults 500 yen, Children 300 yen

Baishoji Temple (FREE)

A nice little temple, with some interesting Buddhist statues, decorations and ornaments.

Chestnut Road

A nice little path to walk down, with some shops selling Obuse chestnuts and the famous chestnut rice.

Floral Garden Obuse

If you are into flowers, this is a great place to visit.  A wide selection of plants and flowers from all over Japan.

How to get there

From Nagano, take the Nagano Electric Railway (private line) to Obuse station (33 mins, 650 yen).

From other places, first get to Nagano, then take the directions above.


Recommended hostels and Cheap Hotels

Obuse is best for a one day trip, so we recommend staying in Nagano.
