Beautiful lake surrounded by modern art – Lake Toya

Lake Toya is a huge lake in Hokkaido, with a few islands in the center formed from the volcanic activity prevalent in the area. One of the highlights, especially for travelers and tourists who don’t want to spend any money, is the free art that surrounds the whole lake. There seems to be up to 100 of the sculptures and pieces of art. If you are really fit and healthy, you can even rent a bicycle and go around the lake in a day, seeing all the art. Here are some highlights near Toyako Onsen, the main town on the lake:

It’s possible to access those islands in the background via the ferry.

Not all the art is minimalist and fancy, some is rather cute!

Lots of deer sculptures! You may be lucky and see some for real if you go hiking or walking in the area.

This one is a bit creepy, but great to finally see for real.
