Takoyaki

takoyaki

Takoyaki are small, golf ball sized balls of batter filled with octopus, ginger and green onion. Traditionally mayonnaise and and a special Takoyaki sauce (similar to Worcestershire sauce) are added on top, but these days there are all sorts of interesting toppings available. A must-try in Japan.

Price: From 400 yen (about $4)

Name in Japanese: takoyaki/たこ焼き

Where can I get them?

There is usually a takeout Takoyaki shop outside trains stations or in nearby shopping malls. The most popular chain is Gindaco (築地銀だこ). It’s best to go to a dedicated Takoyaki place for the real taste. Osaka is most famous for this type of Japanese food.
