Ryoanji Temple

Ryoanji Temple (龍安寺), meaning The Temple of the Dragon at Peace, is a World Heritage listed “dry landscape” garden and temple. It is considered to be one of, if not the best, examples of these in Japan.This garden style features large rock formations with pebbles raked in linear patterns to help in meditation.

Budget travel tips

  • Note that the temple is sometimes written as ‘Ryōan-ji’ in English.
  • There are a few little temples around the complex, that are free to enter.

Take the No.59 bus to Ryoanji-mae.

Opening time: 8:00 am – 5:00 pm (Mar – Nov), 8:30 am – 4:30 pm (Dec – Feb)

Cost: Adults 500 yen, Children 300 yen
