Sanjusangendo Temple

Sanjusangendo Temple (三十三間堂) is a completely breathtaking temple containing one thousand life-size, golden Kannon statues. This place really has to be seen to be believed, and of course photos are prohibited!

Budget travel tips

  • If you don’t have a Kyoto bus pass, you can walk here (see below).
  • Come early to avoid the tour buses.

How to get there

By bus, go to Hakubutsukan Sanjusangendo-mae on bus routes 100, 206 or 208.

To walk from Kyoto station, take the Karasuma (North) exit and you will see Kyoto Tower. Take a right turn down the main street outside the station (Shiokoji Dori) and walk down, walking over a river, until you get to Sanjusangendo Temple on the left. It takes about 20 minutes.

By train, take the Keihan Main Line to Shichijo station. It’s a short walk from here.
