Kamigamo Shrine

Kamigamo Shrine (上賀茂神社), twinned with Shimogamo Shrine to the south, is an important Shinto shrine in northern Kyoto. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is known across the country for its iconic Tatesuna & Saiden sand cones. The shrine is also surrounded by a picturesque primeval forest.

Budget travel tips

  • Visiting shrines can get expensive in Kyoto, so consider this shrine and Shimogamo Shrine if your wallet is a bit empty. They are both free!
  • There is a convenience store just across the bridge if you need anything to drink or some cheap snacks.

How to get there

From Kyoto station or Shimogamo Shrine, take Kyoto City Bus number 4 to Kamigamojinja-mae. bus stop (230 yen). Free with the Kyoto Bus pass.
