Shimogamo Shrine (下鴨神社), linked to the northern Kamimono Shrine, is part of the world heritage sites in Kyoto. It is one of the oldest shrines in Japan, thought to be dating back to the 6th century. Not one of the most popular shrines, but worth visiting if you have done the most famous ones already or want to escape the crowd.
Budget travel tips
- Once you have done the main area, walk south through the forest (Tadasu no Mori) with the huge path. At the end are some more free shrines, often not visited but a quiet place to retreat to.
- This is also a nice place to bring a bento.

How to get there
From Kyoto station, take Kyoto City Bus number 4 to Shimogamojinja-mae bus stop (5 minutes, 230 yen). Free with the Kyoto Bus pass.
